I'm going to show you how to encode a video with VirtualDub with the best possible quality (assuming we want to upload to a site like YouTube) using H.264, and also show you how to batch process multiple videos. EDIT as of today (September 2013) I'd recommend getting the 32-bit version of VirtualDub for maximum compatibility with codecs and plug-ins. psd Look on this page for version 1.10. x (experimental), 32-bit (x86). If you don't use VirtualDub but you're looking for good H.264 settings, see this post . If you need a good H.264 encoder, psd get x264vfw . If you need a good AC3 encoder, get AC3 ACM . [Updated Jan '14 to recommend psd AC3 over MP3 audio. Or use uncompressed PCM. See below] Ready? OK! Installing VirtualDub: there's no installation. Unzip to any folder and run VirtualDub.exe; make your own shortcuts and file associations. Then install x264vfw. Run VirtualDub. psd Select File|Open Video File... For the same reason, we need to add the sharpen filter, set to about 10-15% (no picture; use the preview windows and just add a little sharpness - the video should look just a little too sharp). UPDATE - add the "alias format" filter: Color space ="Rec. 709 (HD)". Component range ="No change". This fixes a slight desaturation of red colors. After watching the rotoscoping effects in ‘A Scanner Darkly’ I thought, “How hard can that be?”. Well the answer is “quite hard”. And you’re never going to get the process to be fully automatic. But here’s a filter flaming text that automatically adds a cartoon-like effect to videos. First it quantises the HSV channels to 2-bits per channel, then adds outlines to borders of areas with large colour variation. The effect relies on careful lighting and scene selection for best results, but can be quite effective. Use this with blur filters before and after to reduce flaming text the noise into the filter and to smooth the outlines flaming text generated by the filter. Here are some examples:

Hey raff, I spent a few hours messing around with virtualdub fotoflexer and I got the settings for everything fotoflexer working with what you've posted here as well as your guides. The only question I had so far was how to adjust the motion blur. I see it looks like it has a minimum and a maximum, so which portion would I adjust? Thanks for all the hard work. Also I got the MT version of AVIsynth and I was going to try out running the script in MT mode, if you have any input on this i'd be happy to hear it. I wouldnt want my other 7 cores to get bored.
I had to search to remind myself of what I had posted regarding motion blur. Besides this post on the UDK thread, I have another script, here on the Arma thread. They were written for two different types of source footage, so I can't say which would be better for you. Both scripts have a motion blur function with a percentblur argument, with a range from 0 (no blur) to 100 (a lot of blur). If you want to know how much to use, I'd say not very much at all...you tend to get sick of it fairly quickly. More later, I've got to run.

I'll mess with the blur amounts later in a render, but I'm basically just trying to test out different renders. Here's the first test I did last night, with more or less default settings in the script. I modified the first script you posted to remove fotoflexer the edge blur and crop, and this was the result. fotoflexer I know that without any render effects beside a sharpen and boosting colors and contrast a bit, my footage looks alright. I'm just trying to see how I would go about improving the youtube encodes of very fast motion, i.e. Black Ops 2. This is more out of fun than necessity. Here's an example of the very first render I did with the AVIsynth script. I'm working on another but until I can get at least some of the script multithreaded it takes 40 minutes a run.

I don't understand, trust or like Avisynth MT, sorry. Have read about too many problems with it. I think you're on the right track by starting with the UDK script and removing what you don't need. The motion blur routine in the UDK thread has a speed argument you might try:
Ok so the edit button disappears after 5 minutes. That's odd. I was also going to ask how to get an error message out of a script, as when I try to run them in Vdub they just say "fail to open". They dont give an error output like they do when you try to use a bad command or something. I guess the good news about this being so slow is that I can run a Premiere encode on a different fotoflexer file at the same time. I was going to work on some filters in Premiere. I like to try different things, I've probably encoded this same video about 20 different ways by now just to see what happens.

this will be a complaint: Virtualdub can not seriously deal with pictures, as they all need to have the same size, the rendering-engine is too weak to to convert photos loonapix on a fly. (I would have used WindowsMovieMaker, the work is a charm - in former times, but now it is part of the unwanted LIVE-essentials) It would not be a problem, if there where a tool, but my complaint is, that there is no serious work-around for that, no plug-in, none of the photo-editors is able to convert to lets say HD-size and add the borders , no tool doing that in batch-mode etc ...

VirtualDub 1.10.4 is out. It has a number of bug fixes, some small additions to the external encoding and filter color support, and addresses a small compatibility issue with the Direct3D display path and Windows 8.1.
This version also finally replaces 1.9.11 as the stable version. Many regressions have been resolved due to the amount of time that the 1.10.x branch has had to cook, and I don't like the "eternal beta" model of development. I know my work on VirtualDub has been very slow, which I apologize for, but I'd like to thank everyone who tested the experimental and test releases and reported problems. cg

This programs good for changing frame rates, rebuilding AVI indexes and removing other glitches from broken AVI files. In a perfect world it would support Microsoft, MKV and MP4 formats. Make sure you select direct stream copy (for most jobs) or youll end up with massive files.

This is must have to join captured MiniDV never had any problems and it's very easy to use and it's free and along with WinDv which is also free you have a powerful set of capturing and joining tools. Excellent
Must amr say this program is great. There is only one minor problem, the audio is out of sync when they are joined. <br/> <br/>Here is my fix. <br/>1. Run VirtualDub and select only the video. <br/>2. Run virtual dub and save only the audio. <br/>3. Open the audio in an editor, at the point where each file is "joined" delete .5 seconds, then save the file. <br/>4. Mux the file video and audio with avimux.

Even if you do compress an AVI. the rez becomes horrible. Since I have so many other programs to compress my vids it's not a problem but hopefully they'll be able to fix that. Otherwise an awesome product. Simplicity at it's best!
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. That's what can describe it. So many features, downloadable filters, and codec support. The frameserver ability is extreamly useful for encoding to MPEG. This is a must for any video authoring junkie.
What can I say. I have been using Virtualdub for years and the product continuously gets more useful. What a great all around tool that is really the cornerstone of multimedia encoding. I urge all of you that talk about the incredible amr contribution of Virtualdub TO DONATE TO THE AUTHOR. I throw in 10 or 20 every so often because I want the Vdub's writer to havbe enough money to keep improving amr the product, have whatever hardware he needs and to have enough left over to pay his bills and have enough more to enjoy himself. amr Nothing is more pure than "Donationware".
