The supernova remnants seem a fragile beauty. Just to be convinced to watch these celestial embroidery: in the constellation Cygnus, NGC 6960, NGC 6990 and NGC 6995 are the three pieces cross of a huge bubble that spreads from tens of thousands cross of years. In the southern hemisphere it is the constellation of Sails home another cosmic lace. This apparent delicacy should not hide the cataclysmic events that are behind the slash. Their presence reflects the violent end of some stars that exploded as a supernova, projecting into space their outer layers always travel tens or hundreds of kilometers per second, leaving instead of the star dying neutron star sometimes coupled with a pulsar.
Near Castor, one of the twins in the constellation Gemini stars, is another one of those persistent, IC 443. Its apparent size is quite impressive, larger than the full moon and its estimated distance of 5,000 light years. Astronomers are very interested in this volatile because it has the particular feature of strongly interacting with the interstellar cross medium. Wise is also responsible for providing proof image.
Wise (Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer) is a NASA space telescope, launched in December 2009. Realizing the full map of the sky in infrared, Wise has made some unexpected discoveries, such as that of dark asteroids or that an invisible ring in NGC 1514. The IC 443 Image below has been adjusted so that the colors correspond to the different materials that the shock wave from the supernova cross meeting during its expansion.
The arc of circle cloudy cross purple top left corresponds to filaments which emit light from atoms of iron, neon, silicon and oxygen excited, and the dust particles are heated by the wave shock that moves in this area a hundred kilometers per second. The blue part of the gas bubble at the bottom of the image is the result of the excitation of hydrogen atoms and tattered green betray them about the presence cross of a cloud of dust that the shock wave through about thirty kilometers per second.
IC 443, the aptly named Medusa Nebula is observed cross through a telescope of at least 20 centimeters in diameter. To locate it, astronomers use the bright star Eta Geminorum cross right side (bottom right). The uncertainty is still high on the date of the supernova explosion Gemini, perhaps there 10,000 years, while the same show happening in the sky of the southern hemisphere, cross in the heart of the constellation sails.
